Montrose coach Lou Cella summed up the result of Friday’s game against Lackawanna Trail simply.

“That’s two in a row for Montrose,” he said.

After squeaking out a one-point victory last week, the Meteors came through again with a 26-14 victory over Lackawanna Trail in a nonleague game Friday night.

“I can’t remember the last time a Montrose football team won two games in a row,” coach Lou Cella said. “I know it’s been a while.”

Trailing, 19-14, in the fourth quarter, Lackawanna Trail recovered a Montrose fumble near midfield with 2:48 left but turned the ball over on downs, giving the Meteors the ball on the Lions’ 35-yard line. Two plays later, quarterback Cayden Myers weaved his way through the defense for a 31-yard touchdown run with 59 seconds left to seal the win.

“But we’re taking it game by game, week by week,” Cella said. “We still have a long way to go. We still have plenty of things to work on. But for right now, we like the way we’re headed and we need to work even harder to get where we want to be. This is an exciting team and we’re having fun.”

Derek Nunez opened the scoring for Montrose with a 38-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. He also jump-started in the offense in the second half with a 57-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to give the Meteors a 16-6 lead. Nunez finished with 130 rushing yards and also added a reception for 31 yards.

Montrose’s Matt Saravitz nailed two field goals in the game for the Meteors to account for the rest of the scoring.

“This was probably the best overall game we played since I’ve been here,” Cella said. “Defensively, we moved toward the ball. We don’t give up many big plays and we’re making more big plays offensively than we have in the past.”
