LEWIS SPARKS

Saber football player, Lewis Sparks, is the Independent’s Athlete of the Week.

Sparks, a Susquehanna Community senior, started playing football eight years ago because his friends encouraged him to try the game. In playing the game he found that he “likes physical contact sports and the adrenaline rush.”

But too much contact has also caused its problems for Sparks, whose senior season ended abruptly. “I injured my shoulder last game (Battle for the Blue Stone) and now I am out for the season, which is really disappointing because it is my senior year.” However, he will be there supporting his teammates and cheering them on during the remainder of the season.

Sparks is already starting his career training by attending the vo-tech program for welding. He has earned certifications in all positions of welding. Post graduation, he plans to continue his education and will pursue an Associate’s degree in Diesel Technology at Johnson College.

The trades he is learning also benefit him in his life outside of school. “I work at Sparks Saw Shop, which is a business my father owns; and I like to fix ATVs and trucks for fun – anything diesel, really.”

He is the son of Louie and Brandes Sparks of Oakland Borough. “My parents inspire me because they encourage me to do my best, be the best person I can be, and keep a positive attitude.”

This work ethic carries into the classroom where Sparks keeps his grades up and is on the honor roll. He describes himself as “easy-going, always up for a challenge, and always willing to help out a friend” and appreciates growing up in a rural community. “I am happy to have grown up in a small town because I have a lot of close friends and family,” Sparks said.
