It’s been smooth sailing in Division III so far for Mountain View in its quest for a fifth straight District 2 Class A championship.

The Lady Eagles sit atop the division at 6-0, while outscoring their opponents, 41-1, in the process.
They’ll close out their regular season this week and will face their two toughest tests of the season.

On Tuesday, Mountain View traveled to Lakeland (5-1), which it beat three times last year en route to a district title. Taylor Flynn, the Division III MVP in 2013, has put together a solid senior season for the Lady Chiefs with eight goals and five assists.

On Thursday, the Lady Eagles will host fellow unbeaten Montrose, which gave Lakeland its only loss, for their regular-season finale. The Lady Meteors have fed off the energy of freshman Madison Gilhool, who leads the division in scoring with 13 goals and adding four assists.

Like Mountain View, Montrose, which has also been aided with five goals and five assists from Brianna Spence, is strong defensively. It has allowed just two goals and shutout five of its six opponents.

“We’ve been working up to and waiting for this time in the season so we’re pretty excited for it,” senior Hannah Richner said. “Throughout the season, the games have gotten tougher, which is good. It’s good to close out the regular season against these two teams because there’s a good chance we could match up against them again in districts.”

Richner, the division’s MVP last season, leads Mountain View with 10 goals and 11 assists. Sam Jones has added nine goals and Ali Showalter has six goals and six assists.

In last week’s play action, Hannah Richner had two goals and two assists to lead the Lady Eagles to a Division III 6-0 win over Forest City.

Sam Jones scored twice for the winners and Ali Showalter had three assists.

Montrose picked up a 3-0 win over Lakeland last week.

Lady Forester goalie Rebecca Moyer had 20 saves.

At Carbondale, Shelby Valvano had two goals and an assist to lead Elk Lake to an 8-2 win.
