Sabers coach Kyle Cook said Mid Valley’s 3-5 defensive scheme gave his team trouble as the Spartans handed Susquehanna a 26-7 loss Friday in a Lackawanna Football Conference Division III game at Spartan Stadium.
“I don’t think we anticipated their linebackers to be as fast as they were,” Cook said.
Susquehanna spoiled the shutout bid with 5:49 to play. Chris Graf recovered a fumble at the Mid Valley 8 and Jarred Mills ran it in from there two plays later.
Western Wayne ran to its first win in division play with a 28-0 win over Montrose at Sharkey Rosetti Sports Complex in a Lackawanna League Division II matchup Friday.
The Wildcats (3-4, 1-1 in division) struggled to break through the Montrose defense, losing three fumbles, until the second half a 21-yard touchdown pass put Western Wayne ahead 14-0.
Montrose (4-3, 0-2 in division) forced three turnovers in the first three quarters, which kept the game in reach for the Meteors.
“They run to the ball, tackle and they really enjoy playing football,” Montrose coach Lou Cella said.
“Ultimately, we didn’t generate enough offense. We did not block well enough.”
Times-Shamrock writers Scott Walsh and Joe Baress contributed to this report.
