Riley Brown has become friends with two of his Liberty Twp. neighbors. Both of them are veterans and the Montrose Area freshman was inspired by them to coordinate this year’s program at his high school on Wednesday, Nov. 11.

As the day came together, Brown said he was personally happy “to be here to honor these people. They deserve a lot,” he said of the veterans attending the program.

The theme chosen for this year’s assembly was “Honoring All of Our Heroes.”

Although some school districts take the national holiday off, High School Principal Bill King said, “I’m glad (Montrose Area has) school so collectively we can come together to celebrate veterans.”

King said, “American citizens have short memories; we forget freedoms we enjoy every day came at a cost.”

He reminded students to take the opportunity to thank a veteran when they see them. “They deserve our honor and recognition on more than just one, two or three days each year,” he said.

Brown told his fellow students that his goal was to change their perspective “on what these men or women have done for each and every one of you.”

The Montrose Area High School band offered a number of musical selections during the program; and vocalist Kira Karpov sang “The Star Spangled Banner.”

Senior class president Joni Host read the poem, “I must go down to the seas again,” by John Masefield.
Several student council members read quotes about Veterans Day.

Brown also presented videos, including President Ronald Reagan’s Veterans Day Prayer; and a touching tribute that reached across generations.

The program capped off the day with a video tribute from Montrose Area faculty and students talking about veterans they know personally and what Veterans Day means to them.

In addition to the program held at the Montrose Area High School, Veterans Day programs also took place at Choconut Valley and Lathrop Street elementary schools.
