The Lady Warriors took on the Lady Meteors in a nail biter of a game on Monday night.

The game consisted of eight lead changes that started in the second quarter. Elk Lake eventually proved victorious, with turnovers hurting the Montrose team.

Montrose racked up 25 turnovers to Elk Lake’s 12, but the Lady Meteors garnered 29 rebounds, five blocks and 12 steals on the night.

Elk Lake’s Justine Johns had seven of the Lady Warriors 10 steals on the night.

Elk Lake took advantage of the turnovers converting those into scoring opportunities.

In the first quarter Elk Lake took an early lead with Keri Jones scoring the first four points of the game.

Whitney Tyler and Rose Warner each scored a basket, as well. It took almost seven minutes for the Lady Meteors to put points on the board, but once Ashley Birchard made the first point for Montrose with a foul shot, the scoring continued for the Lady Meteors. Radvile Vaiculyte made a basket for Montrose and at the end of the first eight minutes Elk Lake was up by five with a score of 8-3.

The second quarter belonged to Montrose. They out-scored Elk Lake 9-5. Kourtney Snigar scored the go-ahead basket, but Elk Lake’s Darci Warner answered with a three-pointer to take back the lead.

Montrose filled in the gap of their first quarter deficit, but at half-time the Lady Warriors held onto a one-point edge, 13-12.

The third quarter was back and forth with four lead changes. Snigar took the lead for Montrose again with a 3-pointer, but it snatched back with a foul shot from Elk Lake’s Abby Johns.

With 55 seconds left in the quarter, Elk Lake coach Alicia Traver earned a technical foul that put her on the bench for the remainder of the game.

Katie Warner took the lead back for Montrose by sinking both of the technical foul shots. It was a short-lived lead as Justine Johns, who had four steals in the quarter, made a foul shot to give Elk Lake a 27-26 lead at the end of the third.

Although in foul trouble in the fourth quarter, Justine Johns continued on her streak that included the seven steals and 11 points. All but four of Elk Lake’s 13 points in the final quarter were scored from the foul line as Montrose got into foul trouble and Elk Lake got the double bonus.

Scoring in the fourth period was even as the Lady Meteors also scored 13 points in the last quarter, ending just one point shy of sending the game into overtime with a tie.

The Lady Meteors points were earned mostly by three-point shots scored by Smith and the Lauren and Harper Andre. Snigar scored the other four points with a field goal and two foul shots.

It came down to the wire and the Elk Lake Lady Warriors claimed a one-point 40-39 victory over the Montrose Lady Meteors.

The high scorer for Elk Lake was Justine Johns with 11 points. Lauren Andre was the lead scorer for Montrose with 10.
