Springville man assaulted in own home

A Springville Twp. man was lying in bed when police say a man broke into his home and hit him in the head with a bedside lamp.

Matthew Vandermark, 37, Meshoppen, has been charged with aggravated assault, burglary, criminal trespass, terroristic threats and criminal mischief in the Oct. 2 incident on Garrison Road.

According to police, Vandermark also kicked a large screen television in the room, breaking it before threatening to kill the man if called the cops.

The victim, age 54, told police he had driven past a friend’s home earlier that day when he heard someone yelling at him. He said he backed his vehicle up and Vandermark walked up to him and the two had a verbal exchange in which the accused called him a name.

The victim told police that around 9 p.m. he heard a noise and then Vandermark walked into his bedroom, grabbed the lamp and struck him in the head and repeatedly hit him in the stomach.

He said the only thing Vandermark said to him was, “How do you like it?”

The victim told police that he believed the assault was related to an situation in the past.

Police obtained a warrant for Vandermark and he was picked up at his residence on Oct. 4.

He was arraigned before District Judge Jeffrey Hollister. Bail was set at $50,000 and he is currently being held in the Susquehanna County Correctional Facility. A preliminary hearing was scheduled for Monday, Oct. 17 in Montrose District Court.
