Area musicians honed their talent and skills at the 2016 County Band Festival, Wednesday, Oct. 12 at Mountain View High School in Kingsley.
The senior high band was under the direction of Tunkhannock High School Band Director Kenny Luckey, and John Scavone of Forest City Regional conducted the junior high ensemble. Students arrived Wednesday morning, and after a full day of rehearsal, performed a concert that evening.
County Band features musicians from the eight school districts located in Susquehanna and Wyoming counties: Blue Ridge (BR), Elk Lake (EL), Forest City (FC), Lackawanna Trail (LT), Montrose (M), Mountain View (MV), Susquehanna (S), and Tunkhannock (T).
Luckey said his main goal was to show the students the difference between being a musician and a person who plays the music. The purpose of being a musician, he said was to “impact the audience” and convey emotions. “Endless Rainbows” by Brian Balmages, lent itself to that discussion.
In addition to “Endless Rainbows,” the senior high band performed “Kinetic Dances” by Randall Standridge; “Anthem for Winds and Percussion” by Claude T. Smith; “Into the Clouds” by Richard Saucedo; and closed the concert with “Spania” by David Shaffer.
The junior high band played “Acclamations” by Ed Huckeby; “Nightsong” by Richard Saucedo; “Honor Roll March” by Ken Harris; “Temple of Sinawava” by John O’Reilly; and closed with a version of the Neil Diamond pop song, “Sweet Caroline.”
Both Luckey and Scavone focused on fun.
Scavone told the junior high band members that he hoped they had a “great experience,” and “found something to take back to your district that was fun.”
Luckey described the day working with the senior band members as a “blast.”
“Music ought to be fun,” he said. “It’s a discipline but you should have fun getting good.”
Both directors thanked the Mountain View School District and its band director, Mason Stiver, for hosting the annual festival.
“I’m really proud that music is so strong in this area,” Luckey said.
