Elk Lake unveils ‘17-’18 calendar

The Elk Lake School Board last Wednesday (March 1) unveiled its tentative 2017-2018 school calendar.
The first day of school for students will be Monday, Aug. 28, followed by a Monday, Sep. 4, Labor Day holiday.
A potential weather-related make-up day which could complicate holiday and travel plans has the potential to occur the day before Thanksgiving, Wednesday, Nov. 22.
“One area that we did adjust was that Wednesday before Thanksgiving,” Elk Lake Superintendent Kenneth Cuomo told board members.
“In the past we’ve had flood days and some days we’ve had snow days before that. It will be classified as a weather-related day,” Cuomo said.
He announced other potential snow make-up days as Jan. 15, Martin Luther King Day; Feb. 19, President’s Day; March 29, an early day during Easter Break; and April 3, a later day in Easter Break. Traditional holidays will be celebrated.
The board also approved the retirement of long-term district special needs teacher Dorothy Callum effective the end of the school year.
“I’ve worked wth Mrs. Callum for 25 years,” said Cuomo. “Just a truly amazing job with the students that will be missed by the students as well as the faculty and staff.”
“Mrs. Callum’s been here for a number of years and she’s done a tremendous job and we’ll definitely miss her,” added board president Eric Emmerich.
In other actions, the board:
*Conducted an executive session that evening from 6:30 to 7 p.m. relating to a personnel matter.
*Approved a memorandum of agreement with the Elk Lake Education Association in a one-time offer granting two years of additional insurance until the member reaches the maximum age of 65 or becomes Medicare eligible. The agreement offer is set to expire June 30.
*Accepted a $1,000 donation from Claverack Rural Electric of Wysox to pay for the district’s participation in the Skills USA competition.
*Approved a 3-year contract totaling $68,925 for the district’s auditors, the Certified Public Accounting firm of Murphy, Dougherty and Co. of Moscow.
*Approved the sixth grade’s trip to Gettysburg in May at a cost of $40 per student, up $5 this year. The school district will be responsible for $3,945 of the cost.
