‘Rural America’ on parade

Sunny skies beckoned thousands to downtown Montrose on July 4 for the annual Kiwanis-Lions-Rotary 3 for the 4th Independence Day activities.
The day kicked off with a one-mile Fun Run, followed by the 5K and 10K road races. (See Sports on page ?? for the top finishers and race photos.
The theme of this year’s Patriotic Parade was “Celebrating a Rural America 4th.”
In the parade float contest, Bridgewater Church took top honors as the Grand Marshal Winner with a prize of $200.
South Montrose Community Church placed second; and the Harford Volunteer Fire Company was third.
RHL Companies, Southtown Veterinary Hospital, and the Susquehanna County Dairy Princess floats rounded out the top six prize-winning floats.
The Ted Brzuskas Memorial Award is presented annually by the Kiwanis Club of Montrose Area to the float the best depicts “service to youth.”
This year’s winner of the $100 award was the Harford Scout Troop.
In addition to the races and parade, vendors filled the Green as chicken barbecue wafted through the air before selling out.
Independence Day festivities were capped off with a fireworks display, sponsored by the Montrose Area Chamber of Commerce, at the high school.
