Montrose golfers jump out with 2 wins

Montrose jumped out to quick start in league play and the Elk Lake girls garnered the first win in program history in a hectic start to league play in the Lackawanna League golf action.

Led by the strong play of freshman Chloe Sipe, the Elk Lake girls defeated Holy Cross on Friday 124-174 to secure a win the school’s inaugural girls’ golf match. The girls’ team matches are medal play. Sipe shot a 36 to finish two over par on the Scotts Green Golf Course in Scott Township.

Taegan Mills fired a 37 and Payton LaRue followed with a 51 to round out the scoring for Elk Lake. Reese Warriner chipped in with a 59 as Elk Lake had four of the top six finishers.

“It was fun to watch,” said Elk Lake Coach Ryan Kipar. “Playing Medal Play allowed us to pair Taegan and Chloe and they helped each other all day.”

Kipar felt the experience for LaRue and Warriner built a lot of confidence that will help them going forward.

“They (LaRue and Warriner) played well enough to beat their opponents,” said Kipar. “That’s going to be key down the road.”

In boys action Montrose jumped out to a 2-1 record as the Meteors defeated rival Elk Lake, 7-2, on Monday, Aug. 20, at Tall Pines Golf Club. 

Riley Brown defeated Nate Warriner, 5 and 4, and combined with Gabby Baker to win the Better Ball over Warriner, 5 and 4.

Isaac Walker defeated Colby Baker, 4 and 2, and teamed with Alexis Hawley to defeat Baker in Better Ball, 4 and 2. Jared Corson defeated Nate Sheldon 3 and 2 while Gabby Baker and Hawley picked up forfeit wins for the Meteors. 

Elk Lake’s Jason Mowry defeated AJ Dovin 4 and 3 and teamed with Sheldon to gain the Better Ball win over Dovin and Corson, 3 and 1.

Two days later Montrose traveled to Memorial Links in Pleasant Mount to capture a 6½-2½ win over Forest City. Walker captured a singles match when he defeated Robert Swegel 5 and 4 and teamed with Theresa Vaccarro to defeat Robert and Abby Swegel 5 and 4 in Better Ball. Vaccarro bested Abby Swegel 5 and 4.

Brown gained another win on the week when he took Lucas O’Neil 5 and 4, and teamed with Gabby Baker to defeat O’Neil in Better Ball 5 and 4. Baker gained points with a forfeit in singles. Henry Nebzydoski defeated Corson 4 and 3 in both individual and Better Ball to earn Forest City’s points.

The Meteors fell short in a bid for to sweep of its first week opponents when Lakeland hung a 6-3 loss on Montrose in the Meteor’s home opener. Corson won over Christian Winkler 3 and 2 and combined with Baker to win the Better Ball over Winkler and Dimitri Sorochka  3 and 2.Walker defeated the Chief’s Trey Vitzakovich 5 and 3 to gain the other point for the Meteors.

Caroline Stack fell to Evan Stremback 5 and 4, and Stremback and Winkler defeated Walker and Stack in Better Ball 4 and 2. Dovin was defeated by Shayne Mizok in a close 2 to 1 match, while Lakeland’s Dante Brunori defeated Vaccarro 2 and 1. Brunori and Mizok then took the Better Ball from Dovin and Vaccarro 4 and 2.

Montrose defeated Old Forge earlier in the week 5½-3½ to claim an overall record of 3-1, however scores of the match were not made available. 

 Mountain View split with Lackawanna Trail with each team earning 4½ points in Monday’s season opener. Ben DeMark and Matt Shwartztrauber each won their individual match and then combined to defeat Josh Rzcidulo and Luke Baldwin in Better Ball, 3 and 2. DeMark was 2 up over Rzcidulo and Schwartztrauber downed Baldwin, 5 and 4. Thomas Johnson earned the other full point for the Eagles when he defeated Nathan Wescott, 4 and 2. However, Wescott and JP Gilroy narrowly took the Better Ball over Johnson and Travis St. Clair, 2 and 1.

In his individual match St. Clair fell to Gilroy 5 and 3. Mountain View’s Collin Samm and Johnny Johnson fell in Better Ball to Adam Kazmierczak and Adam Jones 4 and 3.

Individually, Kazmierczak downed Samm 5 and 4, while Johnson and Jones split.

Mountain View picked up their first win of the season over Holy Cross 5-4 despite losing the first three individual matches.

Thomas Johnson defeated Colin Walsh 5 and 4 and combined with Johnny Johnson to defeat Walsh and Mathias Boles 2 and 1. DeMark defeated Jordan McAndrew 5 and 3, while Schwartztrauber completed the comeback with a win over Ryan Evans 4 and 3. DeMark and Schwartztrauber combined to defeat McAndrew and Evans in Better Ball 5 and 4.

The Eagles’ Emma Masters fell to Tyler Mendicino 3 and 2, while Holy Cross’s Declan Tokash took St. Clair 5 and 4. Mendicino and Tokash also defeated Masters and St. Clair in Better Ball 3 and 2.  Johnny Johnson fell to Boles 2 and 1.

On the back nine of Golden Oak in Windsor, N.Y., Blue Ridge and Old Forge battled to a 4½ tie as Kevin Silfee and Tyler Hillard led the way earning three points together as they won their Better Ball match over Hayden Jones and Andrew Cummings 5 and 4.

Silfee downed Jones 3 and 2 in individual play and Hillard took Cummings 4 and 3. Andrew Scott earned another point for the Raiders when he defeated Chris Sickle 3 and 2, and Jake Downton earned a split with Colby Yaros.

Blue Ridge’s Preston Perry dropped a close match 4 and 3 to Nick Gallagher and Kyle Spoller fell to Jordan Kelly 5 and 3.  Scott and Perry lost the Better Ball to Gallagher and Sickle 2 and 1, while Spoller and Downton lost to Kelly and Yaros 4 and 3.

Silfee defeated Connor Kwiatkowski 1 up and combined with Scott to earn a split with Kwiatkowski and Johnny Barcarola to earn 1½ points for Blue Ridge in their loss to Western Wayne 7-1½. 

Downton dropped a 2 and 1 match to Robert Carey, and Western Wayne’s Matt Stone was one up over Spoller. Carey and Stone took the Better Ball from Downton and Spoller 2-up. The Raiders’ Joe Curtis and Tyler Hillard lost a pair of matches of 1-up to Jacob McCormick and Landon Firmstone respectively, and lost the Better Ball 2 and 1.

Blue Ridge finished the week with a tough 5-4 loss to Mid Valley. Silfee again led the way with two wins as he defeated Albert Kausmyer 2 and 1 and combined with Perry to take the Better Ball 3 and 2 over Kausmyer and Adam Beradelli. Hillard finished 1 up over Adam Jackson, and Downton took Kyle Choyka 2 and 1 to earn the other points for Blue Ridge. Perry fell to Beradelli in head to head play 2 and 1, while Scott lost to Shane Rosencrance 3 and 2. Mariah Minter secured the win with a 5 and 4 win over Spoor.  In Better Ball matches Rosencrance and Jackson defeated Scott and Hillard 2 up, and Choyka and Minter took Downton and Spoor 5 and 4.

Mowry earned the two points for Elk Lake, as the team faced Riverside, with an individual win over Carl Walsh 5 and 4 and then taking the Better Ball from Walsh and Noah Berkoski 4 and 2 as the Warriors fell to Riverside 7-2 last Tuesday at Pine Hills in Taylor. Elk Lake’s Nate Sheldon fell 4 and 3 to Kyle Pulchalski, and Colby Baker dropped a 2 and 1 to Riverside’s Sam Hartman.

The following day Lakeland also defeated Elk Lake 7-2 as Mowry again won his singles match over Winkler 4 and 2 and also defeated Winkler and Brunori 4 and 2. Colby Baker lost 2-up to Mizok and by the same score in Better Ball to Mizok and Tremback. Elk Lake surrendered four points in forfeits.

The Warriors completed their long week with loss to Holy Cross 6½ to 2½. Nate Sheldon picked up an individual win with his victory over Evans 3 and 2 and Colby Baker split with Boles and Mowry split with Tokash to earn half-points for Elk Lake. Mowry also split the Better Ball with Tokash and Walsh. Nate Warriner fell to McAndrew 2 and 1, and McAndrew and Evans combined to defeat Sheldon and Warriner in Better Ball 2 and 1

 Henry Nebzydoski led the way for Forest City in their 5-3 loss to Holy Cross. Nebzydoski defeated Tokash 2 and 1 and took Tokash in Better Ball 3 and 2. Zach Striefski was one up on Mendicino to capture the other point for the Foresters.

In other action Robert Swegel fell to Boles 5 and 4, while Abby Swegel lost to Walsh 4 and 3. Walsh and Boles defeated the Swegels in Better Ball 5 and 4. Forest City’s Lucas O’Neil fell to McAndrew 3 and 2, and McAndrew and Mendicino topped O’Neil and Striefsky in Better Ball  2 and 1.

Forest City was swept by Lackawanna Trail on Friday 9-0. Nebzydoski fell to Gilroy 3 and 1, and Chris Burns lost to Rzcidulo 5 and 3. Gilroy and Rzcidulo earned a 3 an 2 win in Better Ball. Kazmierczak defeated O’Neil 5 and 4, while Striefsky lost to Adam Jones. Kazmierczak and Jones took the Better Ball 5 and 4. Abby Swegel lost to Wescott 5 and 3 and Robert Swegel fell to Luke Walker 4 and 3. Wescott and Walker defeated the Swegels 5 and 3 in Better Ball.
