Lady Sabers clinch title

The Susquehanna Lady Sabers did what most people expected them to do when they clinched the Lackawanna League Division IV title with a 41-28 win over Mountain View on Thursday, Feb. 7.

The title is the second in a row for Susquehanna, but it didn’t come easy. Mountain View came into the match up only two games behind and determined to keep their own title hopes alive.

The Lady Eagles jumped out to 10-6 lead after one quarter as Sydney Newhart established herself early with 6 points.

Susquehanna cut the deficit in the second but continued to struggle offensively and trailed 15-13 at the half.

The Lady Sabers got on track in the third as Taylor Huyck and Mackenzie Steele combined for 11 points as Susquehanna seized control outscoring Mountain View to take a 30-23 lead.

The Susquehanna defense continued to stymie the Eagle offense in the fourth holding them to 5 points while adding 11 more to their own total.

Huyck led all scorers with 16 points; Mackenzie Heath chipped in with 10 and Steele finished with 9. Newhart led Mountain View with 14.

Elk Lake continued its second half surge with a 48-32 win over Forest City.

The host Lady Warriors jumped out to a 19-13 halftime lead and then took control of the game in the third quarter outscoring the Lady Foresters 15-7.

Tamara Voda paced the balanced Elk Lake attack with 10 points while Mercedes Zajaczkowski added 9. Krista Jones chipped in with 8 points and 6 assists, and Maddie Tewksbury contributed 7 points and 10 rebounds.

Bella Pleska led Forest City with a game-high 16 points.

Danielle Goff poured in 22 points as the Blue Ridge Lady Raiders secured their second victory of the year with a 44-37 win over Lackawanna Trail.

Blue Ridge surged ahead in the third quarter after taking a one-point lead into halftime.

Goff led all scorers with 22; Kari Wdowiak added 8 points and Savanah Glover had 7, and was 5-8 from the free throw line.

Montrose fell to Old Forge 54-36 in a Division III/IV crossover game.

Ahead 11-7 after one quarter, the Lady Devils surged ahead outscoring the Lady Meteors 19-8. Montrose bounced back in the third outscoring Old Forge 12-11 in the third but couldn’t sustain a long enough run to challenge.

Tangi Smith led Montrose with 10 points while Harper Andre and Grace Aukema each chipped in with 8.

Elk Lake helped put Mountain View’s grasp of Susquehanna further out-of-reach when the Lady Warriors traveled to Kingsley and earned a 37-34 road victory over the Lady Eagles.

Mountain View opened with a 11-8 lead behind 6 first-quarter points from Newhart. Both teams struggled in the second quarter as Mountain View took a 17-13 lead heading into the locker room.

After intermission, the Lady Warriors outscored Mountain View 24-17 as Zajaczkowski scored 14 points in the second half killing Mountain View on the boards.

Zajaczkowski finished with 16 to pace Elk Lake and Jones added 8. Newhart led Mountain View with 15 points while Abby Neri chipped in with 8.

Montrose jumped out early on Lackawanna Trail outscoring the Lady Lions 16-6 in the first quarter as they cruised to a 57-23 victory.

The Lady Meteors added 20 in the second quarter to put the game out of reach. Harper Andre paced Montrose with 20 points including 3 threes. Chalice Guyette added 11.

Susquehanna held Blue Ridge to two first-half points and dispatched the Lady Raiders 51-17.

Huyck led the way with 17 points and Steele added 13 points and 11 rebounds. Goff and Ashley Torres led Blue Ridge with 4 points each.

Dunmore shut out Forest City in the first quarter as the Lady Bucks marched to a 58-12 victory. Pleska and Maggie Kowlewski each scored 5 points to lead Forest City.

In a final exhibition to help tune up for the playoffs Susquehanna fell to Scranton Prep 56-46.

Susquehanna struggled early as the Lady Sabers were outscored 15-3 in the opening quarter. However, the Sabers got on track in the second quarter scoring 10 and allowing only 12 to trail by 14 at the halfway mark.

The Classics put up 21 on the scoreboard in the third to put the game out of reach. Huyck attempted to keep Susquehanna within striking distance scoring 11 of the team’s 13 points in that quarter.

The Lady Sabers rallied in the fourth to cut the final margin to 10 as Huyck and Steele combined for 15 points.

Huyck led Susquehanna with 22 points; Steele added 11 and Heath chipped in with 9.
