Elk Lake HS principal retires

The Elk Lake School District will now advertise for a new high school principal to replace long term principal Brian Mallery who has retired.

“I want to thank the Elk Lake School Board, administration, faculty, staff, students and community for their support over the past 28 years,” Mallery told board members in a letter read at last week’s monthly board meeting.

“While at Elk Lake I had the opportunity to meet and work with many wonderful people.  My experiences at Elk Lake provide me with many memories that I will cherish.  This is especially true of the many students who have passed through Elk Lake over the course of my tenure.  Sincerely, Brian Mallery,” read the letter.

Board members also accepted — with regret — the retirement letter of language arts instructor Jeffrey Horvath after 30 years.

“Thank you for your consideration of this matter and especially all that you have done for me over the years as we’ve worked together for the benefit of our students,” Horvath told board members in his retirement letter.

“He’s been an institution around here for a long time,” board member Chuck Place said of Horvath.

Elk Lake Superintendent Kenneth Cuomo told board members that he and assistant principal John Warnero would split Mallery’s responsibilities and that he was confident the experienced staff at Elk Lake would absorb his retirement until a replacement is found.  The board granted Cuomo’s request to advertise Mallery’s position.

“We’re gonna’ work well,” Cuomo told the board.   “We have a very seasoned faculty. We’ve been through situations in the past and whenever it’s time to go through situations like this they usually rally around and take care of business and so I think we’ll be okay.     We’ll be a lot busier.  I know I will,” he said.

“He and I worked together for 28 years,” Cuomo said of Mallery.  “I just want to wish both Mr. Horvath and Mr. Mallery the best in their retirement.”

“We’re losing some good people here,” board vice president Arden Tewksbury said.

“He was very, very dedicated to the students, staff and education of the school district.  He’ll be missed.  I enjoyed the man,” said board member Chuck Place.

“The impact that he had on me without question has been phenomenal, but the students, he always put the students first,” said Warnero, Mallery’s assistant principal.

“He lit up with every little thing that they did,” Warnero said.

“He always put students first and he made a great impact on them and they’re going to miss him and I know he misses them,” he added.

In other business, Tewksbury said that the board had an executive session before last week’s meeting concerning personnel issues.  Tewksbury also said that the board had another executive session before the February 27 meeting which also concerned personnel.
