Lady Raiders sweep opponents

Blue Ridge began their quest for a league title with three wins in the opening week of Lackawanna League volleyball action.

The Lady Raiders opened with a 3-0 sweep of Abington Heights as Hunter Heeman led the way with 16 points and nine kills.  

Alison Marshman had 11 assists for Blue Ridge while Lydia Andusko chipped in with eight assists and Alyssa Sherwood had seven kills.

 Blue Ridge got the brooms out again with a 3-0 sweep of Forest City as Makenzie Cook had 12 points including 10 aces to lead the way.

Andusko had 20 assists and Marshman recorded 17 assists for the Lady Raiders while Sherwood and Heeman added seven kills each. Kara Kelly had five kills.

Friday the Lady Raiders finished their hat trick with a 3-0 sweep of Lackawanna Trail behind Marshman’s 21 assists and 14 points, which included four aces. Cook also had 14 points with four aces and added three kills while Sherwood contributed 11 points and five kills. Heeman added 10 kills.

Montrose also opened with two wins over eight days including a thrilling come from behind win over Susquehanna on opening night.

Trailing 2-0 after the first two games the Lady Meteors swept the final three games to take the 3-2 win.

Macey Schillinger had eight points and six kills to lead Montrose while Jaelynn Smith had nine points and Maisie Porter had six digs.

Susquehanna was led by Bethany Burns who had 15 points including seven aces along with seven kills. Megan Kiernan chipped in with nine assists and five digs while Paeton Benson had nine points along with five kills, aces, and digs.

The Lady Meteors were swept by Western Wayne last Wednesday as Rebecca Klemovitch recorded 12 kills and five aces.

Jordan Russell paced Montrose with 11 digs and Jessie Fassler had six assists and Porter added seven digs and two kills.

The Lady Meteors swept rival Elk Lake 3-0 behind Fassler’s 18 assists and seven points.

Taylor Diaz had four kills and two aces and Schillinger chipped in with nine points (four aces) and three kills.

Allana Warner led Elk Lake with nine points including five aces while Olivia Voll had eight assists and five kills. Amanda Voll chipped in with five points and a kill.

Mountain View began the season with back to back wins.

The Lady Eagles opened with a 3-0 win over Elk Lake as Tasha Shay had 18 assists and Rachel Gerfin added eight kills to lead the way. Isabelle Keating chipped in with 13 digs and seven aces.

The Lady Eagles suffered their first loss at the hands of Dunmore 3-1.

After dropping the first two sets Mountain View won a tight third game 29-27 before falling 25-20 in the fourth. Shay had 13 assists and five kills to lead Mountain View and Kelsie Rumola added five kills.

Mountain View also swept Lackawanna Trail 3-0. No statistics were made available.

Susquehanna completed their tough week by being swept by Abington Heights and losing another tough 3-2 match to Forest City.

Against Forest City Susquehanna again had the advantage leading the Lady Forsters 2-1 before dropping the final two games.

Sophie Lawrenson led the Lady Sabers with 27 points and seven digs. Burns had another stellar outing with  18 points (five aces) and 11 kills while Kiernan added 13 assists and 10 points along with five kills and digs.  

Against Abington Heights Burns and Elizabeth Stewart had five points each.

Elk Lake also suffered a sweep at the hands of Dunmore.

Voll had six points and two kills to lead the Lady Warriors. Amelia Comely chipped in with a pair of kills and points.

Forest City defeated Lackawanna Trail 3-1 behind Kelly’s 10 points.

Aiding Kelly were Alexis Kirchem with six aces on seven points and Makayla Williams with seven points and five kills.
