Tough start for girls’ soccer favorites

It was tough start for preseason favorites Elk Lake and Mountain View as the Lackawanna League Girls’ soccer action got underway.

In Lackawanna League Division III, a penalty kick from Bella Pleska enabled the Forest City to prevail over Elk Lake 1-0.

Despite outshooting the Lady Warriors 33-14 Forest City could not find the back of the net as Goalkeeper Tamara Voda recorded 23 saves for Elk Lake.

Her counterpart Maddie Bailer earned 12 saves to preserve the shutout.

Elk Lake evened its record Thursday with a 3-2 come-from-behind win over Carbondale.

After falling behind 2-0 in the first half the Lady Warriors rallied with three goals in the second half.

Sam Hunsinger got Elk Lake on the board with an unassisted goal at the 49:33 mark. Six minutes later Megan Johns converted a pass from Katie Cusaitis to knot the score 2-2.

With just over four minutes to go Cusaitis broke free and sent the game-winner into the back of the net.

Natalie Cross rallied Mountain View getting free to score twice before halftime to cut the deficit to 3-2.

However, neither team could score in the second half as Lakeland prevailed. Morgan Hammond earned 10 saves in the goal for Mountain View.

Montrose found goals few and far between as they began the season.
