Montrose’s Owen Mahadeo enters the final stretch at the Lackawanna League Cross Country finale held at Lackawanna Trail October 15. Mahadeo, an in-season transfer to the district, won his only race for the Meteors.

District II championships loomed in the horizon.

While Holy Cross appears to be a strong contender for both individual and team honors at today’s District II Championships at Lakeland High School, several local athletes look to make their presence felt.

In the boys’ race scheduled for 2:40pm Montrose’s Nicholas Coy will look to continue his strong season and put pressure on defending Class A District Champion Andrew Healey of Holy Cross.

Elk Lake’s Justice Johnson comes into the race with some expectations after finishing the season strong and Susquehanna’s Austin Gow could be a sleeper in the field after putting together a solid season. Blue Ridge Senior Jack Condron seeks a medal in his final District championship race.

Montrose will look to make a push for the team title as Gabriel Wilber has begun to emerge and Freshman Sam Stashko has often finished just behind Coy in many races. James Bixby and Cody Leonard have consistently finished in the top 15 of league races for the Meteors.

Montrose picked up four wins in the final Lackawanna League meet held at Lackawanna Trail October 15.

Owen Mahadeo set a course record at 17:11 to finish first and lead Montrose in his first race of the season after transferring into the district and sitting out the required 21 days. Coy finished second in 17:43 and the pair was joined in the top 15 by teammates Wilber (5th/18:13), Stashko (10th/18:23), Bixby (14th/18:49) and Leonard (15th/18:57).

Johnson finished fourth with a time of 18:12 to lead Elk Lake to three wins. He was joined in the top 15 by Jeremy Quinnan (8th/18:20) and Dylan Way (13th/18:44)

Susquehanna’s Gow placed seventh at 18:19 as the Sabers picked up a win. Mountain View edged Blue Ridge to also pick up a victory despite not having a runner finish in the top 15. Blue Ridge’s Condron placed 12th in 18:37 to pace the Raiders.

Matt Korty finished eighth at Western Wayne in 19:07 as the Foresters lost three matches.
