Suquehanna overcame an ominous start to defeat Holy Redeemer 29-0 and nail down the final spot in the District II Class 2A playoffs.

After fumbling the opening kickoff to give Holy Redeemer the ball on the Susquehanna 27, Linebacker Garrett Decker intercepted a pass to settle Susquehanna down and change the game’s momentum.

Susquehanna scored on the ensuing possession when halfback Calvin Scheideler took a pitch from Decker and pulled up to find Wide Receiver Spencer Beamer for a 34-yard touchdown.

The Sabers tacked on two more scores in the second quarter. Decker completed a drive with a six-yard run to the endzone and followed that with a seven-yard scoring strike to Scheideler on the next possession. Layne Fisk tacked on the extra point and the Sabers led 19-0 at the half.

In the second half Scheideler raced for 43 of his 110 yards rushing on Susquehanna’s first possession and Fisk added another extra point. Fisk would add a 25-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to account for the final score.

Susquehanna held Holy Redeemer to 46 yards of total offense while amassing 247 yards on the ground. In addition to Scheideler, Decker ran for 66 yards and Ryan Koziol added 43.

Susquehanna will play at Dunmore on Friday in a rematch of last year’s District II final.

At Montrose Old Forge returned an interception for a touchdown one minute into the game and never looked back shutting out the Meteors 57-0.

Montrose was again unable to generate a running game and Quarterback Ethan Cina finished his Montrose career with a 10-35 night passing for 88 yards and three interceptions. Dominic Palmatier had four catches for four catches for 29 yards and Damien Rohan added three receptions for 35 yards.
