Susquehanna budget ‘up in the air’

After working on next year’s school district budget over the past couple of weeks, Susquehanna Community Superintendent Bronson Stone told the board that it was “up in the air” and that the district was “bracing for the worst.”

Stone said the district was tightening the budgetary reins and some retiring staff would not be replaced. He also noted that there was no tax increase in the budget presented for the board to vote on at the Wednesday, May 20 meeting.

The board gave its approval to a tentative district budget of $16,315, 419 for the 2020-21 fiscal year; setting the millage at 51.48 for Susquehanna County and 14.75 for Wayne County.

The board approved a bid for fuel oil at $1.1979 per gallon for the 2020-21 school year. Stone said the fuel oil price helped save the district about $50,000.

Stone spoke about CARES Act funding for the district to be spent over a two-year period to help recoup the loss of education over that period. He also said they are crafting summer programming to help stave off learning loses that may or may not have happened over the past months.

The board modified the school calendar, officially designating June 13 as graduation. Stone said it would be the “most unique” graduation event in the history of the district. “We wish them nothing but the best,” he said of the Class of 2020.

A rescheduled date for prom was set for Aug. 1.

The board also approved:

*amended service agreement for a rate correction with the Borough of Lanesboro for campus safety and security;

*contract with Government Software Services for school billing for the 2020-21 school year;

*Title 1 Parent Involvement Policy for the 2020-21 school year;

*appointed the Wayne County Recorder of Deeds to serve as the Realty Treanfer Tax Collector for the municipality of Starrucca for the 2020-21 school year;

*memorandum of understanding between the district and the Susquehanna Community Education Association related to contract fulfillment for the 2019-20 school year;

*memorandum of understanding with the Susquehanna Community non-instructional group related to contract fulfillment for the 2019-20 school year.
