Montrose hires Moyer to Choconut Valley Elementary principal post

The Montrose Area School Board approved the hiring of Madison Moyer as principal of the Choconut Valley Elementary School at the Monday, Feb. 14, meeting.

Moyer – currently a teacher in the Blue Ridge School District – replaces Sean Castellani, who is moving to the principal position at the Tunkhannock Area primary center.

“I could not be happier with our choice,” said Montrose Superintendent Chris McComb to the board on Monday evening.

There was no start date for Moyer listed on the agenda.

Board members also gave their nod to the first reading of the 2022-2023 school calendar, which has a later than usual school start date. McComb said the first draft pushes the start of school a week later than usual, with Aug. 26 as the first teacher day. The last day of school would be June 9.

The board also approved district membership to the New Milford Area Rotary, with McComb acting as the district representative to the club. Blue Ridge and Susquehanna Community have also joined Rotary as corporate members.

The board declared its intention to commit funds from the general fund balance to the district’s bonded debt in the amount of $1.5 million.

Board member Paul Adams said the move will clear the district’s debt and help balance the budget.

McComb thanked Joy Mower for her 31 years of service to the district’s transportation team, as the board approved her Feb. 17 resignation at Monday’s meeting.

In sports news, the board appointed Alex Dragos as an Assistant Wrestling Coach, retroactive to the start of the 2021-22 winter sports season.

Fall coaches for the next school year were also given board approval, including line of coaching staff for football.

The following people were approved as Assistant Football Coaches: Joshua Stankiewicz, Lou Cella, Hunter Williams, Edward Lucas, Scott Stoudt and Daniel John.

Landon Morey was hired as the head girls’ volleyball coach.

The board also approved an agreement between the district and NFHS Network School Broadcast Program, “PlayOn,” for a five-year term beginning Aug. 1, at an annual cost of $4,000.

High school teacher Hilori Schenker was recognized by the board for achieving National Board Certification in Social Studies.

Principal Eric Power said the process to achieve the certification is both “noble” and “rigorous.”

Schenker gave a brief overview of the process which includes a subject matter competency test, as well as the submission of three portfolios.
