Smith named chief financial officer of UHS

The senior team at UHS welcomes James “Jay” Smith to his new post as vice president for Finance and chief financial officer of United Health Services and United Health Services Hospitals in Greater Binghamton, N.Y. Mr. Smith succeeds Rick Borschuk, who has moved into a new role as a strategy and business development consultant to the Office of the President.

A certified public accountant, Smith joined UHS in 2018 as senior director and system controller, supervising all accounting for the UHS healthcare system. Under his direction, UHS successfully closed multiple capital-raising initiatives, including those for the Epic electronic health record implementation and the large public bond offering for the Wilson Project.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, he has worked with various sources to ensure that UHS System members receive all available funds, including those through the CARES Act, which included funds distributed by the Department of Health & Human Services, the payroll protection program administered by the Small Business Administration, and the Medicare advance payments controlled by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Carrigg, president and chief executive officer of UHS. “His understanding of healthcare finance and dedication to the patient experience are leadership qualities that will enable us to thrive in the months and years ahead.”

 A Montrose resident and graduate of Montrose Area High School, Smith received a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania. He began his career as a financial statement auditor working with large regional CPA firms such as EisnerAmper and ParenteBeard (now Baker Tilly) located in the Philadelphia and New York City markets.

Just prior to joining UHS, he held two different corporate controller positions with international manufacturing companies, overseeing consolidations of financial statements, banking and auditor relationships, and enterprise risk management.

As CFO of the UHS System, Smith has responsibility for managing the financial operations of the organization. He works collaboratively with all finance executives and other senior management members across the System to safeguard the assets of the organization and provide financial stewardship.
