Katherine Kempa, the setter for the Lady Raiders volleyball team is the Susquehanna County Independent’s Student Athlete of the Week.
Kempa started playing volleyball as a freshman, but has always loved watching the sport and has been around it since she was a little girl. “I love how it is a team sport, you can’t do it alone. It’s fun and intense and full of excitement.”
So far, she is happy with the success her team is having this year. “We have had a great start to the season. We work extremely well as a team and have been working really hard. We have a close team this year and we get along on and off the court which has helped. We are going to keep working toward success this season.”
In addition to her time on the volleyball court, Kempa is also involved in several other activities at Blue Ridge including track, Leo Club, Prom Committee, and is a member of the National Honor Society.
Outside of school she likes to attend other sporting events and spend time with her friends. “I love helping kids and being around people. Sports are pretty much how I spend a majority of my time.”
Her hard work and determination have paid off and on the court. Kempa has earned high honors every quarter of her high school career; and she was selected as a first-team, volleyball all-star her junior year, and received an honorable mention nod her sophomore year.
Kempa has not yet committed to a college but plans to study education and become a teacher. She lives in Jackson Township and is the daughter of Joseph and Charlene Kempa.
