Two Montrose Area golfers will advance to the East Regional next week after turning in qualifying rounds at the District 2 golf championships Monday at Golden Oaks Golf Club.
Austin Smith (78) and Kory Morrison (81), be part of the Class AA contingent.
“I thought it was possible we could take two to regionals,” Smith said. “I feel that me and Kory are two of the more skilled players of everybody. Holes 15 and 16, I didn’t play so hot. I chipped it to 3 feet on No. 15 and it rolled off the green, which was a bad break. And I four-putted 16. Otherwise, it wasn’t that bad.”
Morrison took a more dramatic route to regionals. He was 10-over par on his front nine, then played even on the far-more-difficult back nine.
“I never would have thought 81 would be inside the cut,” Morrison said. “I played really well on the back but I lost focus, my putting wasn’t working too well, and I hit two out of bounds on the par 5. I thought maybe I could come back, and I did.”
