Montrose’s Meghan Gilhool is currently the points leader in Division IV of the Lackawanna League, averaging 21 points per game. She has scored almost 200 points so far this season. She is the Independent’s Student Athlete of the Week.
Gilhool, a senior, started playing organized basketball nine years ago, but has played longer than that. “We had a basketball hoop at my house since I was born, so I was always out there shooting with my dad and brother and sister.” Over the years she has developed a love for the game. “I love that it’s such a team sport you need all five people on the court to help you play defense and score baskets. I love the team aspect and how close everyone comes throughout the season.”
Throughout her high school career she has had a lot of success. She is a four-year starter and has gone to the girls’ basketball state tournament twice in three years with her team, making it to the Final Four as a freshman.
Once the school season is over, basketball continues for Gilhool. “I’ve played AAU for the past six years and that’s helped me develop into the player I am.”
“Our season is going well. We had a tough pre-season schedule and that helped us prepare for the league,” Gilhool said.
The Lady Meteors won the Denise Reddon Tournament in December for the fifth straight year and Gilhool was named tourney MVP. She has also twice been named a First Team All-Star for basketball.
Gilhool also plays soccer and runs track. She’s been successful in those endeavors as well. She was named a First Team All-Star for Track last season and a Second-Team All-Star for soccer last year as well.
Outside of sports, Gilhool keeps herself busy with academics and clubs at school. She is in the National Honor Society, ISafe, Varsity Club, and the AP Club. She was also a member of the 2014 Homecoming Court.
Gilhool is the daughter of Joe and Dana Gilhool of Bridgewater Township. She plans to attend Western New England University and will major in Health Sciences.
