The Lady Meteors racked up a quick 10 points in the first quarter Thursday, Jan. 8 as they faced Lackawanna Trail and took a 50-29 win over the Lady Lions.
Meghan Gilhool scored four points and Morgan Groover scored six. They also dominated under the basket, with Gilhool grabbing three rebounds and a steal, Groover had four rebounds, a blocked shot and a steal, and Angela Russell four rebounds and a steal.
The trend continued in the second quarter with the Lady Meteors adding another 10 to the scoreboard.
The Lady Lions finally caught a break when Montrose’s Hannah Dieck fouled Daria Lewandowski as she was going up for a three-pointer, sending her to the foul line with the chance at three shots. Lewandowski was able to convert one of her shots into a point for Trail.
With four seconds left in the quarter she was able to score the first field goal for the Lady Lions ending the half with a score of Montrose 20, Lackawanna Trail 3.
The Lady Lions came back from the half to put points on the board but the Montrose team continued its dominance.
Gilhool added 10 points, including four foul shots, making her perfect on the night going six for six from the line. Defensively she had three steals and added two more rebounds.
Fallon Gurn added six more points, giving the Lady Meteors 16 points in the third. Groover had four more rebounds for a total of 12. The quarter ended with Montrose up 36-10.
The final quarter had a different group starting for Montrose.
Gilhool and Russell stayed in for the fourth quarter as substitutes took the court with them. Katie Warner scored six points, Hailey Rapisardi and Radvile Vaiciulyte each added a bucket. At the opposite end of the court the Lady Lions put up a fight and were able to outscore the Lady Meteors 19-14.
Gilhool was the high scorer for Montrose with 20 points and eight rebounds. Groover followed with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
The Lady Meteors are 3-0 in Div. IV play this season.
In other girls’ basketball play action last week, Mountain View and Forest City both collected wins.
At Elk Lake, Ariana Gabriel scored 22 points and Tori Wilder added 20 to lead Mountain View to a Division IV, 67-54, win over Elk Lake.
Darci Warner scored 21 points for Elk Lake and Whitney Tyler had 16.
At Forest City, Kendra Bendyk scored 15 points to lead the Lady Foresters to a 45-24 win over Blue Rdige.
Katelyn Zembrzycki and McKenzie Hartman each scored 11 for the winners.
Isabella Cosmello led Blue Ridge with 12 points.
Forest City is 3-0 in division play this season.
Mikaela Hargett and D.J. Decker each scored seven points for Susquehanna in a 53-30 loss to Carbondale Area in a Division III-IV crossover game.
The Mountain View girls were defeated 59-46 by Wyoming Seminary in a nonleague game.
Makenna Whitaker scored 17 points for Mountain View.
