Freshman MacKenzie Hartman is a starter on the varsity basketball team, after spending the fall as a starter on the soccer team.

Hartman plyed for the NEPA Flames in seventh grade with Amber Jacobs as her coach.

“She is a role model for me and it was a great experience to have been coached by her,” Hartman said.

She played for JB Hoops AAU travel basketball team in the spring and attended workouts in the summer with the high school team in a basketball summer league.

“Even with my life being consumed with sports, I’ve been able to keep up with my grades by staying on high honors every quarter since fifth grade,” she said.

Hartman is a three-year member of student council and has volunteered to help at the Steamtown Marathon for the past 3 years.

“It has been really cool seeing how the runners prepare for the long run,” she said. “I really think we can be a force to be reckoned with this basketball season.”

Senior Kayleigh Payne dedicates plenty of time to improving her own volleyball skills and cheerleading, but aside from that, she recently took the time to hold a clinic for upcoming volleyball players.

Payne teamed with Sam Scholz in May and developed this clinic for their senior project, hoping to encourage as many as they could to participate in the school’s volleyball program.

“It was really cool to see an interest develop in some of the kids and to see them improve as the clinic moved on,” Payne said.

The clinic ran every day after school from 3-5 p.m. and focused mostly on improving skills and teaching some of the nuances of the game. Payne said she hopes the clinic continues and brings in more players and better results.

Mountain View
Freshman Sarah Carpenetti spent a day in mid-December with fellow members of the National Honor Society visiting veterans at the Gino Merli Veterans Center and singing Christmas carols.

“They’ve been doing it the last couple years and it sounded like it was a lot of fun,” she said.

Carpenetti, who runs cross-country and competes in long distance and the long jump on the track team, is also a member of 4H and enjoys riding.
