Mountain View’s Makenna Whitaker got her celebration out of the way early.

Forest City saved its for after the final buzzer.

Whitaker scored the 1,000th point of her career but the Lady Foresters rallied from a seven-point deficit in the final eight minutes to edge Mountain View, 45-43, in girls Lackawanna League Division IV basketball Wednesday night.

Coming into the game, Whitaker needed just one point to reach 1,000. She got a chance right away, fouled on a fast break in the opening minute.

“I was a wreck,” Whitaker said. “There were tons of people there, and once I missed first foul shot, I was like, ‘oh crap.’ There was nervousness, not that it wouldn’t happen, but when it would happen.”

With Katelyn Zembrzycki leading the way with 15 points and Kendra Bendyk adding 12, Forest City fought back down the stretch to spoil the ending to Whitaker’s evening.

“I’m not too bummed,” Whitaker said. “We played pretty well.

“This is something I always wanted and I worked very hard for. The fact that my teammates were so excited for me and wanted to get it so much, they really supported me and I really appreciate that. It’s one of my top moments. There have been so many awesome players up here. It’s humbling.”

Whitaker finished with 14 points and Tori Wilder led the Lady Eagles with 19 points.

The Lady Foresters are now 4-0 in Division play; and the loss took Mountain View to a split 2-2 record.
