Honesdale handles Montrose

BY ASHLEY TEATUM, Times-Shamrock Writer

HONESDALE – Montrose Area’s football team couldn’t catch a break against Honesdale on Friday night as the Hornet’s picked up their first win of the year and handed the Meteors their fifth loss.

The Hornets scored all of their points in the first half behind four touchdowns from Kyle Carney and quarterback Kevin Miller’s touchdown pass to Jon Gillow to beat Montrose, 35-6, in a crossover matchup of winless teams at Honesdale High School Stadium.

Montrose (0-5) managed just one first down in the first quarter, and it took the Meteors two more drives in the second quarter before they garnered another first down.

Even then, after Jeremy Dibble connected with Zack Loomis for a 25-yard pass, his next pass was intercepted by Honesdale’s Chavez Lill.

An anxious Honesdale line committed four false start penalties on the first drive alone, but Carney capped it with a 2-yard rush to get the Hornets (1-4) on the board.

“I think our team worked hard all around,” Carney said. “We just needed to put points on the board and get a win. Just got to go for a win.”

Honesdale ate up the time for most of the third quarter once the mercy-rule running clock went into effect, and Montrose’s only score came on its final drive of the game.
