A former local gridiron standout has moved up to the next level and is playing collegiate football for NCAA DivisionIIIKing’s College.
Dan Kempa, 18, ofJackson, are playing for the Monarchs, and both adjusting to new roles at the college level.
Kempa said he is in the midst of adjusting to a new role in the King’s lineup as a freshman.
After going from a star quarterback for Susquehanna in his high school years, he is now playing at wide receiver for King’s.
“I started as a safety, and now they have me moved to wide receiver,” Kempa said. “I don’t have a lot of experience there, but the coaches were happy with the way I’ve been catching the ball in practice.”
Kempa said that being at receiver is working out so far, and looks forward to seeing more playing time for King’s.
“It’s been a lot different than high school,” Kempa said. “Everyone has their assignment. It’s not like high school where people play multiple positions. It’s a lot less time on the field.”
However, the change isn’t bringing Kempa down, and he said he’s just looking to do his job well.
“You have to do your job,” Kempa said. “Although it’s more physically and mentally challenging it’s definitely fun.”
Kempa said he’s looking at his freshman year as a learning experience, and a chance to move up the depth chart.
And in the meantime he is planning to work hard on the field and on his studies as a business administration major.
