It was a night of recognitions at the Blue Ridge Board of Education meeting on Monday, Jan. 9.
Superintendent Robert McTiernan acknowledged the service of board members reading the state proclamation of January as School Directors Recognition Month.
Board president Laurie Brown-Bonner presented plaques to former board members Alan Hall, who now served as a county commissioner, and Joel Whitehead for their years of service to the district.
Whitehead also had a presentation of his own to make.
He gave Bonner a gavel – made from locally grown cherry wood which he himself hand-lathed.
High School Principal Matthew Nebzydoski also recognized seniors Emmalee Huston, David Miller and Kailey Ragard. Each month, members of the senior class are chosen to be recognized in front of the board for their accomplishments and contributions to the school.
Senior Kevin McCarey will now serve as the student representative to the board.
Board member Harold Empett was chosen to serve as theBlue RidgeSchool Districtrepresentative to the NEIU 19 Board through June 30, 2014.
Empett takes the place of Whitehead who served as the NEIU rep for 21 of the past 27 years.
Robert Michael Stewart was approved as the District’s Network Supervisor at his current salary and benefit level.
McTiernan said that currently Stewart was paid as an hourly employee and more research into fair labor standards was needed to determine whether he should be salaried instead.
The superintendent expects to have that information for the board by the February 6 business meeting.
Nebzydoski told the board that the middle and high schools are preparing for the course selection process.
He said the high school was piloting two new advanced placement courses – AP Government and AP Biology; and two new music electives would be offered to students.
Board member Cindy Gaughan mentioned upcoming Parent Council meetings. The Jan. 19 meeting will focus on the cafeteria and food service program in the district.
Bonner mentioned that an article written for the school newspaper by a student about Sen. Gene Yaw’s visit to the campus was published in the state senators newletter.
