For the past seven years, the Rotary Club of Montrose has recognized outstanding students in the Montrose andElkLakeschool districts.
The “students of the month” are chosen on a monthly basis – October through May – based on criteria established by the Rotary. Those chosen must have show interest in the welfare of others
and are perceived as having high ethical standards.
Students recognized this year includeCiera Cook,LydiaWatkins, Megan Gregory, Ryan Wilson, Maura Warner, Richard Guiton, Jacob Myers and Cathlene Farnelli.
Club secretary Ruth Wilmarth said the students are recognized during the club meetings.
“It’s a great forum for them in the local community. It gives them a confidence when they come in and talk to us about what they have done in school and what their future plans are,” Wilmarth said.
“And it’s a good thing for the Rotary members, too,” she added. “We get to see and meet young people who have good thoughts from all different backgrounds and interests.”
Of the 56 students that have received the recognition, Wilmarth said the criteria have been demonstrated in many different ways. She also said the club takes time to explain to the students what Rotary is about.
The selected students receive a President’s Citation and a marble paperweight inscribed with Rotary’s “Four-WayTest:” Is it the truth?; Is it fair to all concerned?; Will it build goodwill and better friendships?; and Will is be beneficial to all concerned?”
Wilmarth said she tells the studnts, “If you abide by this, you’re not going to go wrong.”
