Eagles, Meteors end in tie

Down by one againstMountain Viewand with storm clouds looming in the distance Thursday, Montrose didn’t have much time on the clock to take a chance at scoring.

But with two seconds left, Myra Lattimore played a ball up the middle to Kassidi Ramirez, who drilled it into the top left corner of the goal to knot the score, 1-1, in a Lackawanna League Division IV girls soccer match.

Lightning strikes delayed the game for 1 hour, 15 minutes, before referees finally called the game a tie.

“I played for 40 years, coached for 25, and I’ve never seen a goal like that – far post, upper corner, with one second to go,” Montrose assistant coach Jerry Homscher said. “It doesn’t get any better than that.

“I just put Kassidi in. She was there for the last couple of minutes, and she made it big.”

The last timeMountain Viewtied a match was in its season opener againstForestCityin 2010. Last year the Lady Eagles finished the regular season unbeaten.

Mountain Viewgot good looks at the goal in the first half, but could not capitalize, even on two consecutive corner kicks with about 15 minutes left in the half.

“We played Prep and Abington last week in scrimmages, and we struggled a lot, but we got better as the week went on, and we got better today,”Mountain Viewcoach Errol Mannick said. “We just didn’t take care of the ball enough, especially on the mid and forward side.

“It’s the first game. We’ve got a lot of room to learn.”

In the 30th minute, Jenny Molenko played a ball down the middle and recovered the ball off a goalkeeper stop to putMountain Viewup, 1-0.

“I had a breakaway,” Molenko said. “I wanted to go to the opposite post, and (the goalkeeper) had a hand on it, bobbled it, and I just used my body and had an open shot.”

While the Lady Eagles controlled the midfield in the first half, Montrose came out strong in the second half, garnering more possessions and forcing some turnovers.

After an offsides call againstMountain View, Montrose got the ball with two minutes left to play. That’s when the Lady Meteors took advantage of a smaller group of defenders by the goal and Ramirez hit the equalizer.

“I can’t believe that just happened,” Ramirez said. “It was an incredible pass byMyraand I still can’t believe it went in.

“We worked as a team together whole time.”

Montrose head coach John Cherundolo was not at the game due to illness.

Forest City

TheForestCitygirls’ soccer team opened the season to take a 9-0 victory overElkLake’s Warriors at home on Tuesday afternoon.

Maegan Goben had four goals and an assist and Carly Erdmann also scored four goals to lead  the Foresters to a Division IV win.

ForestCityhad 37 shots on goal and seven corners while goalie Cassandra Bendyk recorded one save.

ElkLakehad one shot on goal and one corner kick while recording 26 saves on goal.
