The game plan for Lake-Lehman was a simple one: Establish the line of scrimmage and play smash-mouth football.
That goal was accomplished as the Black Knights ran for 370 yards on their way to a 49-0 victory over Montrose on Friday evening at Edward Edwards Stadium.
Dustin Jones lead the way with 147 yards and a pair of touchdowns. John Van Scoy chipped in with 62 yards and two scores while Tommy Donovan added 59 yards and a touchdown while Josh Sayre and Zach Jayne each scored a touchdown.
“That was our identity tonight, we want to run the football,” Lehman coach Jerry Gilsky said.
After forcing the Meteors to punt the football on their first possession, the Black Knights embarked on a nine-play, 92-yard drive for the game’s first score. Van Scoy’s 7-yard touchdown run capped the drive.
Josh Sayre intercepted a pass on the Meteors’ next possession to give Lehman the football. The Knights ran the ball eight consecutive times, covering 62 yards with Donovan scoring from 5 yards out.
Lehman’s defense forced a Montrose fumble that was recovered by Donovan on the Lehman 29. On an inside handoff, Van Scoy rumbled seven yards for the Black Knights’ score and a 21-0 lead.
The Black Knights ended the first half by marching 64 yards in seven plays with Sayre scoring on a 4-yard run for a 28-0 lead.
Sayre’s second interception of the game in the second half gave Lehman the ball at the Meteors 19.
It took Dustin Jones four plays to cover that distance, with the last resulting in a 1-yard touchdown run.
On the next Meteors possession, Lake-Lehman’s Pete Borum recovered a fumble and it resulted in another score, as Jones rumbled 24 yards for his second score of the evening.
Lehman’s defense forced Montrose to give up the ball on downs on the Meteors’ next possession and Lehman finished the night with a Jayne 19-yard touchdown run.
