The Montrose offense struggled to capitalize onWestern Wayneerrors as the Wildcats ran over the Meteors, 54-6.
Despite the Wildcats fumbling the ball six times, with four of them ending up in turnovers, Montrose couldn’t mount enough offense to get past a surgingWestern Wayneteam.
“Saturday’s game did not turn out the way we wanted it to,” Montrose coach Russell Canevari said on Monday.
“We were in the game until about halfway through the second quarter. We were able to get some turnovers early but were not able to capitalize on them.”
Western Wayne’s James Berger scored four touchdowns, on a punt return and three long touchdown passes from Johnny Rhodes, and Jayson Figueroa added 171 rushing yards and two touchdowns as the Wildcats beat Montrose at Sharkey Rosetti Athletic Complex on Saturday.
“OnceWestern Waynegot their offense rolling, we were not able to stop them,” Canevari said. “Whether it was their running game or passing game, they were able to capitalize on our mistakes.”
Western Wayneracked up more than 500 yards total offense despite losing four fumbles, two in the first quarter inside the Montrose 10.
Rhodes and Berger more than made up for those, first connecting on a 51-yard strike with9:30to play in the half, then with a 40 yard pass.
Meteor Dan Zapolski’s 13-yard TD catch from backup quarterback Dylan Heeman was Montrose’s only score of the contest.
Starter Jeremy Dibble was knocked out of the game moments before the Meteors scored.
Figueroa, who had 150 yards in the first half, was rewarded with a pair of short scoring runs.
His 2-yard touchdown with1:09left was followed by a 1-yard run with 22.6 seconds left after the line-drive kickoff hit a Montrose player and was recovered by Berger, who hauled in a 48-yard TD pass to make it 41-6 midway through the third.
Andy Ormiston added a 1-yard run in the fourth, and Ray Langendoerfer’s 33-yard jaunt capped the scoring.
