Cara Evans captured what had eluded her her first two varsity seasons, and it will make for a sweet Halloween. Evans defeated Scranton Prep’s Lily Lengyel 6-0, 6-1 to win her first District II Class 2A title and punch her ticket to the PIAA championships that begin Oct. 31 and finish Nov. 1.
In the semifinal, Evans dispatched Scranton Prep’s Emma Cuck, 6-0, 6-0 as she continued her
dominance in the bracket. Until the final Evans’ only other game loss came against Dallas’s
Mahi Dohl. Lengyel did dampen the day for the Evans family in the semifinals when she defeated Anna Evans 6-0, 6-2 to conclude Anna Evans’ Freshmen individual season.
Anna Evans was not done with tennis for the season after the loss. She teamed with Erin
Tillotson to make a run to the District II Class 2A doubles championship. The Lady Meteor pair opened with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Honesdale’s Alexis Mazzotta and Irene Smith. They followed that with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Wyoming Area’s Emma and Molly Kratz to reach the semifinal.
There, Evans and Tillotson defeated Scranton Prep’s Adithi Velaga and Hannah LaCoe. The Montrose duo rallied after losing the first set 6-3 to win 6-2, 6-3.
In the finals Evans and Tillotson found themselves matched against Scranton Prep’s Cuck and
Lengyel, who used their experience and broad game to claim the District II title with a 6-0, 6-1
victory.
