It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Thomas Francis McCartan, aged 81 on December 11, 2025 in Bentonville, Arkansas.
Born on May 7, 1944 in Binghamton, New York, Tom’s formative years were spent growing up in Montrose, Pennsylvania, where he graduated from Montrose High School in 1962. After serving in the United States Navy, Tom went on to graduate from SUNY Binghamton, earning both a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Business Administration. He built a successful career as a Senior Business Analyst, working for Exxon Corporation in New Jersey and Houston, Texas, before continuing his professional journey at the Walmart Headquarters in Bentonville, Arkansas.
In 1996, Tom trained in Colorado Springs for the Houston Tenneco Marathon, a challenge he embraced with determination and pride, and he completed in under five hours. A lifelong lover of the game, he was an avid tennis player and a dedicated member of the Walmart Tennis Team, where he competed for several years. Following his retirement from Walmart, Tom found the greatest joys in the simple pleasures of life – spending time with his family and grandchildren, tending his garden, harvesting his orchard, and bird watching. These meaningful moments reflected his kind spirit and deep devotion to the people who meant the most to him.
Tom is survived by his wife Judith of 55 years, sons Thomas A. McCartan and Michael McCartan, and daughter Elizabeth McCartan-Curtis. His grandchildren, Abigail, Yemina, Ella, Naomi, and Jedediah McCartan. He is survived by his sister Jane McCartan McCarthy, his niece Mary McCarthy O’Connell, and nephew Joseph McCarthy. He will be sorely missed by his trusty yellow lab, Finnegan, who never left his side. He is preceded in death by his parents Thomas C. and Gladys W. McCartan of Montrose.
A celebration of Tom’s life will be held at a later time. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to The Bentonville Public Library, 405 S Main Street, Bentonville, AR 72712, in his memory.
