Sometimes you just need a little help from your friends. Or your rivals. Mountain View secured the Lackawanna League Division III championship with a pair of victories, and with some help from rival Elk Lake, when the Lady Warriors defeated Montrose 46-43 in the league finale.
Montrose and Mountain View set the stage for a possible showdown when they each opened the week with wins. The Lady Meteors downed Lackawanna Trail and Junior Sadie Jones scored her 1,000th career point while the Lady Eagles defeated Forest City on Senior Night.
With both teams at 12-1 heading into the final night of the league play, Mountain View
dismantled Carbondale 61-8, but Elk Lake rallied to spoil Montrose’s Senior Night and give the
league title to Mountain View.
Elk Lake’s Piper Keeney corralled a rebound with just over a minute to play drove the ball up
the court and was fouled and converted the second of two free throws to put the Lady Warriors
up for good in their 46-43 win over Montrose. The Lady Warrior defense forced the ball out of Jones’ hands and a jumpshot from Vivy Nabywaniec was long.
On the ensuing trip down, Laci Ayotte was fouled and made one of two free throws. The Elk
Lake defense forced another turnover and Madi Casslebury was fouled after the inbounds and
added two more free throws.
But Montrose had one final chance when McKenna Kublo was fouled just before the buzzer
from about 22 feet giving her three free throws with 0.2 seconds left. Kublo hit the first first for the final margin, but was long on her second and with only enough time for a tip in Elk Lake secured the win.
Elk Lake jumped out to the early lead, winning the first quarter 8-5, but the Lady Meteors got
their offense going in the second quarter to 17-14 at intermission. The Lady Warriors doubled up their score in the third but Montrose added 13 of their own to lead 30-28 heading into the final quarter.
