Montrose golf team looks to compete

BY KEVIN WOODRUFF

The Montrose Area golfers are coming off a hot 2010 season where the team finished in first place in Lackawanna League Northern Division.

Montrose, coached by Mike Zuba, had a 12-1-1 record and a division championship last season.

The Meteors lost a pair of golfers to graduation in Cole Wheaton and Billy Stranburg but return 13 players to the roster this season.

Zuba said that he hopes to be competitive on the field and have the team’s players do well in the classroom.

“I hope to be very competitive plus have a strong academic honor role goal of 80 percent,” Zuba said.

He believes that Honesdale, Wallenpaupack and Lakeland will provide a challenge to the Meteors this season, and thinks that there may be a sleeper team in Mountain View.

The Meteors will look to returners Lance Nealy and Jordan Smith to play in the starting lineup, and Zuba said he sees potential in many others on the roster.

The Montrose Area varsity golf team is comprised of seniors Smith, Mason Legg, Casey O’Reilley and Matt Sobiech; juniors Nealy, Dan English, Tommy Krupinski, Katie Clark, Garrett Miller, Anthony Augentti and Casey Capwell; sophomores Cameron Dean and Codi Bennett; and freshmen Corey Morrison, Caleb Hoal and Bradly Wayman.
