Hike for Hope

The Susquehanna County Suicide Awareness Initiative invites community members in the county to join us at Salt Springs State Park on Saturday, May 14, for a Hike for Hope.

The guided hike will begin t 6 p.m. in the Overlook parking lot and will travel along the beautiful Overlook Trail.

A candlelight vigil will follow in the Memorial Garden at 7 p.m.

Light refreshments will be served.

If there is inclement weather, we will meet at the Williams Pavilion, near the main entrance of the park.

Take time to enjoy what Mother Nature has to offer, remember loved ones and find hope.

Salt Springs Park events on tap

The Friends of Salt Springs Park announce their upcoming events. Salt Springs Park is located off Silver Creek Rd., in Franklin Forks. For more information and program updates, visit friendsofsaltspringspark.org or call 570-967-7275.

Full Moon Hike. Saturday, May 14, 8:30 p.m. Come explore the park by the light of a full moon. End the evening around a campfire sharing snacks and stories. Bring a snack to share, flashlight, and adventurous spirit. Fee: $5; families, $15; members, free.

Metal Detecting. Sunday, May 15, 1–4 pm.  We’re going to do some metal detecting this afternoon and invite you to join us. Bring your detector, if you have one, and wear good hiking shoes as this involves crossing a large, rather wet field to a site where some people’s trash / other people’s treasures have been found. Meet at the Friends Land Parking Lot on Buckley Road. Fee: $10.

Spring vendor extravaganza, May 21

Along with the arrival of daffodil and tulip blooms, and the gorgeous Baltimore Orioles and Rose-Breasted Grosbeaks is the time for the annual Spring Vendor & Craft Event.

On Saturday, May 21st, 2022, the Susquehanna United Methodist Church, 1361 Main St. Susquehanna, Fellowship/Dining Room will be a-buzz with wall to wall Vendors and Craftspeople. The doors open at  10:00 AM and will remain open for your shopping pleasure until 3:00 PM. Please enter in the back entrance across from Dollar General. 

The Extravaganza features Vendors’ quality merchandise and some one-of-a-kind items, all at affordable prices. Some of the items offered are: handmade wreaths, concrete garden statuary, crocheted items and plants, quilts, jams, jellies, local honey, photography, handmade jewelry, wooden toy swords, Books by local Author, John Benson, handmade blankets, beeswax candles, and much more. “Thirty-One Gifts”, “Pink Zebra”, “Scentsy” and “Tastefully Simple” will also be represented along with many unique craft items.

As an added bonus, the Susquehanna United Methodist Women will be holding a bake sale, and while you check your list twice and rest your feet, you may also enjoy their lunch menu. Please mark this exciting event on your calendar and plan to be with us.

Explore waterbugs!!!  Join Conservation District staff members, Chris Santore and Amber Jacobson on Saturday, May 21, 1-3 p.m., as they lead participants in a macroinvertebrate investigation. Come explore Silver Creek and collect aquatic insects to discover what is living there and what their presence can tell us about the quality of the stream. Participants are encouraged to bring waders if possible or clothes that they don’t mind getting wet. All other equipment will be provided. There is no cost to attend this event. Meet at the Salt Springs State Park parking lot next to the Wheaton House. RSVP for this event by calling the Susquehanna County Conservation District at 570-782-2105.

 

Rail-Trail events in May

This month the Rail-Trail Council of NEPA is focusing on mental wellness and the benefits of the Trail, as part of the building health series with Walking Mondays, Biking Tuesdays, a Full Moon Walk and a Second Saturday Trail-Meditation-Mindfulness Walk, as well was Pop-up Hikes and Bikes.

Walking Mondays meet at 10 a.m. at the Union Dale Trailhead on May 16 and 23.

Biking Wednesdays meet at the Forest City Trailhead at 5 p.m. on May 11, 18 and 25.

The Full Moon Walk will start at the Union Dale Trailhead on May 16.

The Second Saturday Trail-Meditation-Mindfulness Walk will meet at 10 a.m. on May 14 at the tank on Homestead St., to walk to Panther’s Preserve.

A special event is also planned this month. A Bike to Farm-to-Table at Camp Bluestone will be held on Saturday, May 21, noon-4 p.m.

Ride to Camp Bluestone, meeting at the Union Dale Trailhead at noon, but riders may also start at the Fiddle Lake Trailhead or the Ararat Trailhead, based on your most comfortable riding distance.

When you arrive, the food will be waiting and the music will be playing. Sit, relax and enjoy the views, or dance to the music.

‘The Sparks’ performing at Grace Lutheran

On Saturday, May 14, The Sparks will be performing at 2 p.m., at Grace Lutheran Church, Hop Bottom.

The performance in celebration of Mother’s Day will be followed by desserts. The community is invited to attend.

 

Chicken & Biscuit Dinner

A Chicken and Biscuit Dinner will be held Saturday, May 14, at Springville United Methodist Church.  Drive thru pick up only from 4 – 6 p.m. Please preorder by May 6. 

The dinner includes: chicken & biscuit, mashed potatoes and gravy, vegetable, cole slaw, cranberry sauce and dessert.  $12. Pre-order by calling: 570-965-2160 or 570-965-2332.

 

Endless Mts. PSEA-Retired to Meet

Retired education personnel from Bradford, Sullivan, Susquehanna and Wyoming counties who are members of Endless Mountains Chapter, PSEA-Retired are invited to its meeting, Thursday, May 19, at Mark’s Valley View Restaurant, Laceyville, starting at 11 a.m.

Northeastern Region officers will attend.  Program is “Maximizing PSEA Members Benefits.”  Lunch will be ordered from menu.

Hope for a Broken World

Hope For A Broken World, a Community Ascension Day Service featuring an update and music by Ukrainian Christians from Binghamton, will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday evening, May 26th at the First Presbyterian Church, 367 Church Street in Montrose.

The service will also feature special numbers by area musicians, congregational hymns and prayers, and refurbished banners designed by Cheryl Coleman. You are invited to bring medical supplies and non-perishable food for the people of Ukraine. An offering for Ukraine will be received, which will be matched and doubled by the Binghamton First Ukrainian Pentecostal Church.

A rummage sale will be held Saturday, June 4, 9 a.m.-3 p.m., at St. Mark’s Church, Main St., New Milford.

 

Ham Dinner

Christ Episcopal Church, corner or Delaware & Dundaff streets, Forest City, will hold a take-out ham dinner, on Saturday, June 11, 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Dinners are $12, and include ham with gravy, mashed potatoes, glazed carrots, coleslaw, desserts.

Blue Ridge ALC Ongoing Events

United Fire’s 175th Anniversary

United Fire Company’s 175th Anniversary celebration  will be held Saturday, June 18.

Family friendly fun begins at 4 p.m. at the firehall. firemen’s parade at 6:30 p.m., with lineup at 5:30 p.m. Parade entries are welcome.

The block party and firehall open house will feature kids’ games, cornhole tournament; Big 6 Wheel; instant bingo; food and drinks from local vendors.

 

Old Time Fiddlers at Thompson UMC

The Thompson United Methodist Church will be hosting the Old Time Fiddlers on Friday, July 8, at 8 p.m.

Light refreshments will be available for purchase during intermission. Please join us for an evening of music.
