MONTROSE — A Susquehanna County man has been arrested by state police for breaking into a tractor trailer cab and assaulting the driver at a gas station on Nov. 9. Pennsylvania State Police said David Smith, 39, of New Milford was trying to rob the truck driver as he slept in its cab. The assault took place at the Kwik Fill in Montrose, located at 618 Crossley Road at around 7 p.m.
The victim, a 25-year-old man from Altoona, woke to a loud bang when Smith smashed in the window and attacked him. The victim sustained minor injuries. Smith then fled the scene in a grey Dodge Ram crew cab truck.
Troopers at the Gibson station said Sunday that Smith was arrested for attempted robbery, burglary, attempted theft, unlawful restraint and criminal mischief. Smith was arraigned Thursday by Magisterial District Judge Gregory C. Scheer and issued a secure bail. Smith is now being jailed at the Wyoming County Correctional facility. A docket filed Nov. 20 said a preliminary hearing was scheduled for Dec. 8 and monetary bail was set at 10%, $50,000.
According to troopers, the same Dodge truck was involved in another incident on Post Pond Road, Bridgewater Twp., roughly a mile east of State Route 167. It was reported by residents living in the area that the truck was driving through fields and was being chased by a male on foot. Upon PSP arrival, the truck fled the scene.
