Elk Mountain Ski Resort in Union Dale has started making snow, and will soon come to life as skiers and snowboarders take to the slopes.

Gregg Confer, Elk Mountain’s general manager, said that the crew at Elk is busy making snow, despite a warm spell last week.

“We’re back to cold weather now, and we’re going to keep making snow,” Confer said.

He said that rain on Wednesday was a setback, but that it wasn’t an unusual occurrence.

“It happens,” Confer said. “It’s just that time of year.”

Confer said that if the crews at Elk are working every day, it will take about a week to get enough snow laid down to open some trails up for skiers.

He said that the mountain could conceivably open next week, or the following, depending on the weather conditions.

And when patrons arrive, they may notice some changes at Elk.

“We’ve done a lot of tree work here this past year,” Confer said. “We planted another 1,200 trees on the mountain.”

He also noted that the kitchen at the Winter’s Garden Restaurant has been completely replaced, and that two new roofs were put on buildings at the resort.

In addition, the rental shop got new equipment, and a new tractor for grooming was purchased.

Confer said that he hopes to have a season as great as the past two have been.

He said that when the mountain opens, there will be five or six trails available to skiers and snowboarders.

The Susquehanna, Tioga, East, West and Beginner slopes will open first, and then the Tunkhannock and Hiawatha along with the rest will open soon after.

As for the reason skiers and snowboarders keep coming back to Elk Mountain year after year, Confer said the reason is simple.

“We have great skiing conditions at Elk,” Confer said. “And our customers recognize that.”
