Blue Ridge’s Dalton Church and Susquehanna’s Tom Maby both brought home gold medals from the District II Class AA wrestling championships at Lake-Lehman on Saturday.

Church, who finished fifth at districts last season, claimed the championship at 130 with a 7-4 decision over James McMoore of Nanticoke. He defeated No. 1 seed Devin Fiorentino form Elk Lake in the semifinal.

“This is just a tremendous feeling,” Church said. “I had such a good day here. Competition-wise I came here fourth, expecting a really good challenge.

“Me and Devin go a ways back. We always used to wrestle each other when we were kids. Being able to beat him was just tremendous. It was one of my goals to be able to come in here, beat the No. 1 seed and win it.”

In his quarterfinal bout Friday, Fiorentino, a senior registered his 100th career victory.

“I was feeling good, and I knew it was going to be my 100th, so I was all hyped up,” Fiorentino said. “I knew after that first takedown, it was over.

“I was just waiting for that second chance to take him out. It was awesome.”

Fiorentino took fourth place on the day, narrowly missing the cut for the regional tournament.

Maby took gold in the 140-pound weight class by defeating Hanover’s Matt Lukachinsky in a 12-1 decision.
