Phillips golden at districts

Elk Lake’s Adam Phillips and picked up a gold medal at the District II Class AA finals at the Wilkes-Barre CYC on Friday and Saturday.

Phillips, a junior, took first in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:00.93, nearly one second ahead of Dallas’ Brandon Harding, who finished at 1:01.90.

“I knew I just had to swim my race,” said the top-sseded Phillips. “I knew I could swim a one (minute) flat. I was hoping that’d be enough and it ended up being enough.”

Phillips qualified for the state championship taking place at Bucknell University from Mar. 16-19.

Phillips also grabbed a second place medal for the Warriors with a 2:03.54 finish in the 200 IM behind Holy Redeemer’s Connor Boyle, who was two-tenths of a second faster.

Elk Lake’s Chelsea Karabin took second place in the 100 freestyle at 55.79 while Holy Redeemer’s Elizabeth Finnegan took first at 55.53.

Warrior Abby Zdancewicz took second place in the 500 freestyle at 5:30.19, while Scranton Prep’s Maria Nonneneberg took first at 5:09.37. Zdancewicz also took a fifth place medal in the 200 freestyle at 2:04.26.

The Warrior 400 free relay team of Rina Nikolaidis, Emmie Gibson, Zdancewicz and Karabin took second place at 3:50.29, while Scranton Prep took first at 3:46.12.

Halloran also had a third place finish in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:01.18 behind Holy Cross’ Megan Carey in first at 2:00.18.

Karabin took third place in the 50 freestyle at 25.21 while Scranton Prep’s Rebekah Campo took first at 24.05.

Elk Lake’s 400 free relay team of Cody Mowry, Brad Grosvenor, Alex Manzek and Adam Phillips took a fourth place medal as the team finished in 3:37.94.

The Warrior 200 free relay team of Mowry, Grosvenor, John Kreig and Phillips medaled with a sixth place finish at 1:37.18.

Elk Lake’s boys’ 200 medley relay team (Codie Malloy, Alex Manzek, Grosvenor, Kreig) took eighth place at 2:04.28.
