Susquehanna council was introduced to Aaron Gould at their March 15 meeting. Gould is looking to locate his business in Susguehanna, in the one remaining building of the Erie Shops and also the Starrucca House, used for offices.

According to Gould, his business deals in non-hazardous materials with no dust. Wages from this business which deals with the natural gas industry could go to $20 per hour.

Gould said his business will increase rail traffic but would do his best to keep truck traffic at a minimum.

Council President David Scales asked for a meeting to explain to the community just what the proposed business will mean to the residents and potential employees.

Also attending the meeting was Chick Nyne from PennDOT.

Nyne explained the progress on the work scheduled for the two walls located at Franklin and Euclid Avenues. He said the project is moving right along and due to be submitted in September, 2011 with the contract let in January, so construction can begin in the Spring of 2012.

Kathy Ragard, candidate for District Judge spoke to council and those attending about her qualifications.

Council passed a resolution pertaining to the borrowing of money for the purchase of a backhoe from Gibson Township. The $20,000 is being borrowed from Peoples Neighborhood Bank at a rate of 4.35 percent for five years. The borough’s old backhoe was sold by sealed bid to Hazleton Equipment for $6,391. There were four bids on this piece of equipment, with Hazleton being the high bidder.

Merrill Lynch paperwork pertaining to a new trustee; a resolution regarding Home Town Days banner and the borough’s Historic Preservation Ordinance were all tabled.

Under new business, the question of purchasing new chairs for the council room was also tabled.

Scales reported the phone system problems have been solved with the price of a service call.
