Sophomore Cody DeBoer broke the 34-year-old school record in the long jump with a NCAA automatic qualifying mark on Saturday afternoon in Richmond, Va., as the Shippensburg University men’s outdoor track and field squad finished the Fred Hardy Invitational with several solid performances.
Ship head coach Dave Osanitsch authorized his jumpers to try a long approach on their last attempt of the day and DeBoer nailed his leap, posting a mark of 24 feet, 9 inches that matches the NCAA automatic qualifying standard.
The old long jump record of 24 feet 1 inch was set in 1977 by Russ Dickinson.
DeBoer’s jump marked a reverse from the order of historic jumps at the indoor national championships.
On Saturday, just before DeBoer achieved his automatic qualifier, freshman Herman Kirkland posted a NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 24 feet. Kirkland, the PSAC indoor long jump record holder, ended up finishing second for the afternoon behind DeBoer.
