Hundreds of gallons of petroleum-based products spilled from a truck headed to a natural gas well site early Wednesday morning, Mar. 23, in Springville Twp. after the driver lost control on snow covered roads.
Colleen Stutzman, DEP assistant regional director in Wilkes-Barre said the operator of a Fleet Serve, of Ponder, Texas, vehicle lost control on hilly portion of State Rt. 3006 and tipped onto its side at about 4:30 a.m.
The truck, according to the DEP spokesperson, was carrying 250 gallons of motor oil; 150-200 gallons of waste motor oil; 150 gallons of automatic transmission fluid; 25 gallons of hydraulic oil; 25 gallons of gear oil; and 20 gallons of antifreeze.
Stutzman said there was no evidence that any diesel fuel leaked from the vehicle.
She also noted that earlier reports of fracking compounds leaking were unfounded.
A Hazmat team, TEEM Environmental, evaluated the scene at about 9:15 a.m. The hazmat company was going to construct a diversion ditch to keep the fluids from entering nearby Thomas Creek, Stutzman said.
“By the time emergency responders left the scene at about 10:30 a.m., the truck had been uprighted and all the leaking fluids had been contained,” Stutzman said.
DEP’s water management division will follow up on the incident with a clean up report.
Stutzman said the Fleet Serve will be required to file a report and remediate the spill.
The crash closed the road for several hours on Wednesday.
Pennsylvania State Police, Susquehanna County Emergency Management and Springville Volunteer Fire Company were also on the scene.
Police identified the driver as Alex Fought, 24, of Argyle Denton, Texas. He will be cited for driving a vehicle at a safe speed.
