With trout season approaching on April 16, Giles Evans has spent the past few weeks getting his store in order.

And Evans, who owns Brady and Cavany Sporting Goods along Route 29 in Eaton Township, said that he will have everything a fisherman needs to catch trout.

Some of his best-selling merchandise is his wide array of trout bait.

Evans said he will carry butterworms, super meal worms, red worms, golden worms, wax worms, salted minnows, nightcrawlers, live minnows, Berkely Powerbait and salmon eggs.

According to Evans, the salted minnows he carries are difficult to find, and are a fan-favorite among many of his regular customers.

His stock of meal worms will come in 8,000 at a time, while the night crawlers will come in about 5,000 at a time and he has on the way a shipment of 40-pounds of fathead minnows.

In addition to his bait selection, there will be a variety of gear offered at Brady and Cavany.

Some of the gear includes artificial flies, spinners, Rapala lures, bait cans, nets, rods, reels and the like.

Evans also carries hip boots and chest waders, which he said are good for going into deep waters.

He also offers felt-bottom waders that conform to the rocks on the bottom of the stream to help from slipping on the rocks.

“We carry basically everything a person will need,” Evans said. “I think we have the best selection in the area and people can walk in and help themselves.”

Along with Evans’ wide variety of gear, he also offers fishing license sales. A regular PA resident license is $22.70, with an additional $9.70 for a trout stamp.

And for those fishermen who may be new to the sport, Evans said that Brady and Cavany has everything a person will need to get started.

Evans said that trout season is usually good for business at his store, because it tends to be a local tradition among many families.

“It’s a tradition for most people around here,” Evans said. “And a big deal for a lot of people.”

That’s why Evans is bringing in a number of helpers for the opening weekend including, Bob Hobbes, Tom Rogler, Harold Kuschel, Don Williams, Wendel Williams, Dick Peckins, Becca McClain and Mallia Evans.

The store will be open at 5:30 a.m. on Saturday, Apr. 16, for opening day and will be open late the two previous nights, with closing hours of 8 p.m. on Apr. 14, and 9 p.m. on Apr. 15.

Evans said that the store will be plenty busy with people looking to get out on hotspots along Bowman Creek and Mehoopany Creek.
