Nye faces added flight charge

A 39-year-old Montrose man awaiting trial on rape and sexual assault charges in Susquehanna County now faces new charges on avoiding apprehension and prosecution.

Bryan Nye appeared in front of District Judge Jeffrey Hollister in Montrose and had the new charges also bound over to county court.

Two state police detectives took the stand at the preliminary hearing. Both testified that Nye knew police were looking for him in during the early part of March 2010.

Lead investigator on the case Tpr. Greg Deck said numerous agencies were involved in the search for Nye, including U.S. Marshal Service, New York State Police, county probation, the sheriff’s department as well as Pennsylvania State Police.

Deck also said he had been in contact with two of Nye’s girlfriends who gave the trooper different explanations for Nye not turning himself into authorities during the investigation.

After a four-month search, Nye turned himself in on July 19, 2010, in exchange for hindering apprehension charges being dropped against one of the woman, Stacy Edwards.

Nye’s other girlfriend, Carrie Blanton pleaded guilty to hindering apprehension charges in 2010.

At the hearing, Nye’s attorney Mark Powell said no evidence had been given that his client knew there was a warrant for his arrest at the time police were searching for him.

District Attorney Jason Legg argued Nye did know of the arrest warrants obtained by police and the probation department.
