More courthouse repairs on tap

BY STACI WILSON

Repair work at the courthouse complex is continuing with another project approved by the commissioners.

The bluestone sidewalk and sub-base in front of the courthouse will be replaced and repairs made to two sets of steps at the Maple St. side of the building.

The cost of the project is $9,300. Commissioners Leon Allen and Mary Ann Warren voted at the June 8 meeting to sign the work proposal with TIMZ Construction Co., Inc., Kingsley. Commissioner Michael Giangrieco abstained from the vote.

The stone wall in front of the courthouse has also been repaired after it was hit by two different vehicles in the same week.

The facade of the Warner Building, part of the Courthouse Complex, received emergency repair work after chunks of the building failed sending debris down onto the Lake Ave. sidewalk.

The county will use liquid fuels money to pay for the Monument Street paving project. The work was awarded to Bothar Construction LLC, of Binghamton, N.Y. – the lowest qualified bidder at $31,630 for the project.

The commissioners also signed the Lackawanna/ Susquehanna Commission on Drug and Alcohol Programs provider contracts for fiscal year 2011-12.

Most of the program funding comes from the state, leaving the county match portion of the program costs at just over $14,292.

In Susquehanna County, Trehab receives the bulk of the drug and alcohol program dollars for its prevention, intervention and treatment programs.

For the upcoming year, Trehab was allocated $80,600 for its prevention program; $41,500 for intervention; and treatment is funded on a fee-for-service basis. For its outpatient program, Trehab was allocated $173,000.

The commissioners also accepted, with regret, the resignation of Beverly Bennett from the Lackawanna/Susquehanna Drug and Alcohol Advisory Board.

Thomas Syle, of Montrose, was appointed to fill that vacancy, effective June 8, per the recommendation of the D&A board. His term will run until Sept. 7, 2013.

The county solid waste plan is now changing, said Warren. The commissioners signed an amendment to the contract with MidAtlantic Solid Waste Consultants which will provide up to an additional $6,500 for work that is outside the scope of the original contract.

Warren said DEP had issues with one local hauler which required several conference calls to resolve resulting in the plan change.

Dennis Maloney, of Maloney’s Irish Sports Pub and Family Restaurant in Hallstead, was reappointed to serve on the Endless Mountains Visitors Bureau committee for a two-year term beginning July 1.
