SCCTC graduates 115

Susquehanna County Career and Technology Center graduated a ***record*** class of 115 Thursday night, but the students got more than just diplomas.

More than $17,000 in awards
were handed out to the top students acrosss eight vocational areas.

And Benjamin Stang, top electrical, plumbing and heating student who would also get his high school diploma from Elk
Lake Saturday, even got a job to go with a $1,000 prize.

“This is a serious job offer,” Kevin Lynn of the Linde Corporation said as he handed Stang his business card as well as a check.

Lynn said it was the first time the Linde Corporation – which serves the Marcellus natural gas industry in the manufacture and installation of pipes and fittings – had given out a check to an SCCTC student.

Jerri Traver received the outstanding SCCTC student award.

Numerous students were awarded tools of the trade, and the lobby tables were piled high with gifts designated for graduates, from tool kits and levels to cosmetology products and business or trade school
scholarships.

Christine Cokely,  the only business education major among the SCCTC grads, and a state competition qualifier in Accounting II at the Future Business Leaders of America competition in Hershey, received numerous awards, which presenter Daniel McGrath said

Rather than a valedictory speech, Timothy Jensen, automotive technology program graduate and president of the school’s Skills USA team, addressed his fellow grads.

“I have nothing but positive
things to say. It was a great experience, both the Skills USA
competition and the SCCTC program in general,” Jensen said.

He noted that his respect for SCCTC director Alice Davis and the other faculty grew greatly during his senior year.

He especially thanked Kevin Noldy, describing him as “the best teacher I ever had, who takes time with all students, and is respected by the whole class.”

All of the faculty who presented awards remarked on the size and quality of the graduating class, and said they would be missed.

“One of the presenters, Jeremie Cannella, choked back tears while handing out an award from Mederi Clinicals for an outstanding aesthetician graduate.

Cannella and a co-presenter, partners in the skincare
products company, were both graduates of SCCTC’s cosmetology program 16 years ago, and thanked Davis for life-changing instruction and inspiration.
