Relay reaches up

BY STACI WILSON

The intense heat did not diminish the spirit of the Relay for Life teams at this past weekend’s event.

At the end of the 24-hour event, $47,749 was raised for the American Cancer Society – almost reaching the $60,850 goal.

Cindy Delaney, of the American Cancer Society said, “Everyone worked together to achieve this awesome amount of donations.”

But the total could still climb. The Relay fundraising year ends on Aug. 31 and teams are encouraged to continue their efforts, Delaney said.

“Cancer does not take a break or vacation. People with cancer have to deal with it 24 hours a day everyday. We need to continue our mission of finding a cure,” she said.

Proceeds raised at Relay for Life events help fundACSservices and cancer research.

During the Relay, event chair Peter Bell announced the American Cancer Society will once again have a presence in Susquehanna County.

EndlessMountainsHealth Systems has offered space for an outreach office at its Rehabilitation andWellnessCenteronGrow Ave, (Rt. 706), Montrose.

The office will be staffed strictly with volunteers and will be open on a part-time basis.

Team winners of Relay contests were: Cake Decorating Contest – Angels Among Us; with 2nd place – Button Weller; Team T-Shirt Contest – Gibson Gaitors; Most Creative Campsite – Fairdale Grange; Best Incorporation of Mission – Catherine’s Crusaders; and Overall Best Campsite – Gibson Gaitors.

The date for next year’s Relay for Life has been set. It will be held, Friday and Saturday, July 20-21, on the track at theMontroseAreaHigh School.
